With over twenty five years of experience resulting in an array of distinguished achievement awards, Dr. Frank Cammisa specializes in the surgical treatment of spinal disorders. He particularly focuses on minimally invasive spinal surgery, computer-assisted spinal surgery, microsurgery, athletic spinal injuries and motion-preserving procedures, including artificial disc replacement. He is Chief Emeritus of the Spine Service at Hospital for Special Surgery and Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.
A fixture on Castle Connolly's rankings of America's Top Doctors, Dr. Cammisa has dedicated his career to improving the lives of those that suffer from spinal disorders both here and abroad. He is repeatedly elected in New York magazine's "Best Doctors" issue each year and his numerous research publications, medical chapters, and awarded grants is a reflection of his commitment to treating spinal disorders and cultivating best methods of practice. Dr. Cammisa has been affiliated with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and founded The National Spinal Research Foundation.
The research in which Dr. Cammisa has led has advanced the treatment of complex spine conditions. Recognized as a pioneer in the use of new surgical techniques, procedures and modalities, he often participates as the principal investigator. His areas of investigation include computer-assisted image guidance, demineralized bone matrix, minimally invasive spinal surgery, and the artificial disc as an alternative to spinal fusion for debilitating back pain. He has authored and published countless research articles and chapters; allowing him to obtain grants that are not easily awarded. Dr. Cammisa was a lead investigator of a national study funded by the National Institutes of Health, in which $21 million dollars had been allotted to study the difference in treatment outcomes of surgical versus nonsurgical approaches for herniated discs, degenerative spondylolisthesis, and spinal stenosis.
Dr. Cammisa’s deep rooted history in treating pro-athletes has molded his many designations, including team physician for the Giants and Jets football teams and spine consultant for the National Hockey League Player Association. Additionally, members of the Knicks basketball team consult with Dr. Cammisa for his expert opinion.
Dr. Cammisa is board certified in Orthopedic surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of various medical societies, including the Cervical Spine Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society, and North American Spine Society. Additionally, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons as well as a member of the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine and Spine Arthroplasty Society.
